Outreach and Competition Projects

Outreach and Competition Projects
SGAC Strategic Communications Team
Will address key issues of public relations for SGAC and improve international communications between young space activists, developing in-house expertise and tools for communication, promotion, and media.
Yuri's Night and World Space Week
Yuri’s Night is our longest running and most successful project to date. Celebrating the flight into space of Yuri Gagarin on April 12, each year over 100 parties are held around the world. Plan your own party next year, or join the global team to help spread the word of Yuri's Night around the whole world. Imagine if the whole world could think of space for just one day!
Every year from October 4-10, the UN declares the World Space Week to celebrate the first human-made object in space (Oct. 4, 1957) and the creation of the Outer Space Treaty (Oct. 10, 1967) with global activities dedicated to space.
This group will help organise and promote the two largest events in the world dedicated to celebrating and promoting space exploration.
Launch your own space experiment
With the kind support of UP Aerospace the SGAC is now able to offer sub-orbital launches for small experiments at the lowest cost possible. Under this offer, an experiment can be flown into space, recovered, and provided back to young experimenters for as little as US$2000.
SGAC "Move An Asteroid" International Technical Paper Competition (formerly MoonMars Workshop Space Transportation Technical Paper Competition)
Asteroid and comet impacts are relevant natural threats to the Earth. This project is a global asteroid mitigation technical paper competition administered by the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). The objective of the competition is to encourage global interest in the topic of the NEO hazard while simultaneously attempting to develop innovative mitigation techniques. The goal is that this will be an annual competition, starting in 2008.
This would be an international technical paper administered by the SGAC with participation of outside experts for assistance in judging. This competition would call for teams to submit a 3-10 page technical paper consisting of no more than 3 people per team/entry (all team members are under 33, per the definition by the IAF of "young professional" for that year) that will call for unique ideas on how to move asteroids (asteroid mitigation). Format for this final paper is IAF paper format. The deadline for this competition would be June, with announcement of winners in July (tentative). The prize is a round trip to IAC city, registration for SGC and IAC, hotel for SGC and IAC, per diem for the travel, a presentation at SGC, and potentially a presentation at IAC (all paid for by the competition). Currently, it is envisioned that one member from the 1st place team and one member from the 2nd place team would be given the prize. Both teams would present at the SGC with only the first a place team presenting at the IAC. All items just discussed are tentative pending posting of final rules and regulations, which will be published soon on the SGAC website.
This project has changed slightly from its previous incarnation as the MoonMars Workshop Space Transportation Technical Paper Competition. The previous idea was focused on space transportation concepts in general but still in a technical paper competition. The new asteroid mitigation focus of the competition still retains elements of space transportation theme.
SGAC Latin American Working Group
This group promotes SGAC and space to the Latin American region.
Space Generation Advisory Council Project Research Team
Will formalise and structure SGAC's approach to new project research and reporting.
- The highlight project under this group is the "Youth visions for the next 50 years" project
MoonMars Workshop Case for Human Exploration in conjunction with the Planetary Society
Will create a media piece stating why humans, not just widely distributed robots, need to explore space.
Space for Humanity
Help answer the question "Why is so much money wasted in space instead of spending it on something to improve life on Earth?"
Space and Environment
Did you ever wonder if Space Technology and the space community could help the Earth's environment? Climate change, pollution, desertification, etc. are changing the ecological balance of our planet leading to loss of life and severe problems for humans at large. SGAC is at an early stage trying to scope out how Space Agencies and Technologies can help our planet, perhaps on a planetary scale. We need your help for it – together we can save the world and explore space at the same time. How? By delivering the correct message to the people who can most benefit from it.
International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems
A SGAC project team on ICG/GNSS was created to promote international cooperation in GNSS and GNSS applications, in support of the ICG. One of the goals of the project team is to provide input to ICG, particularly on matters related to education and public outreach, and act as a medium for information dissemination. The team will conduct promotional activities relating to cooperation in GNSS and GNSS applications.
MoonMars Workshop Habitat Design Competition
Will organise and coordinate an ongoing competition on various aspects of designing a lunar base or subsystem.
Students Reaching Students
Will create an award for students or student groups who excel at helping other students or student groups understand the benefits of space.
Have your own project in mind?
SGAC is an incubator for several space development projects with the current projects listed here. SGAC is always looking for new project ideas that will help us meet our goals and vision. If you would like to suggest a project, please complete our proposal form.
